Climate Change in the Middle East and North Africa: Challenges and Implications of the Water Crisis
Beirut 28-29 Sep 2023
Water is the most important element of life, and its primary source, as it is the cradle of the first civilizations on the banks of the Tigris, Euphrates and Nile, water is linked to human life as a source of drinking, agriculture and the life of animals needed by the individual and society, and a means of hygiene. As it manifested the importance of water in its association with several mythical perceptions and religious representations, as it is hardly devoid of any religious belief in reverence for water and giving it a privileged position And with the development of human civilization and the development of industries that had a significant impact in bringing about climate changes that affected the natural balances of the planet, and this was clearly reflected through the rise in temperatures, which led to a decrease in rain rates and an increase in the rate of evaporation. Factors that were negatively reflected and led to a decrease in the level of rivers and an increase in drought and desertification rates, and the rise in sea levels due to the melting of ice has affected and will negatively affect coastal areas in the future. The current and future water crisis will affect hundreds of millions of people on the planet, as the per capita share of potable water will decrease, and climate changes and the water crisis will lead to dire economic and social consequences. This escalating crisis is matched by local and global policies that do not take into account these serious risks. Perhaps the most dangerous thing is that indifference to these risks and the failure to develop policies and strategic plans that limit their repercussions will result in many natural crises that threaten living organisms and humanity as a whole. In the context of raising awareness of these risks and as part of the proactive efforts to reduce their risks and alert them, this conference will be held to address a number of issues related to this matter. Where it will deal with the study of climate change and the water crisis by seeing several fields of knowledge that combine the science of climate change, law, politics, economics, media and sociology. This ambitious project, which is a contribution from our center in addressing these climatic risks, seeks to study the challenges and consequences of the water crisis in the Middle East and North Africa, through the outcome of the experiences and knowledge and academic efforts of a group of researchers from different disciplines to identify the nature of this crisis, monitor all its aspects, and show The reasons that led to this, and thinking of ways and means to reduce them present and in the future.Through this step, the European Center for Middle East Studies seeks to get involved in a documentary humanitarian project that looks forward to contributing to addressing one of the biggest risks facing the countries of the Middle East and North Africa.
